- IL - Downers Grove
The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) has recognized the student NSSLHA Chapter on the Downers Grove Campus for its outstanding achievements in the 2022-23 academic year. The student organization has been awarded Gold Chapter Honors for its exceptional performance in member recruitment and engagement, community outreach and service, legislative advocacy, and fundraising.
The recognition was announced by the National NSSLHA organization, which represents dedicated students studying communication sciences and disorders, speech-language pathology, and audiology across the country at various academic levels.
鈥淭he foundation of our outreach efforts is rooted in community service, professionalism, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. We strive to provide our students with the opportunity to become a well-rounded future clinician by demonstrating a deep commitment to the speech-language pathology field,鈥 said Sarah Mueller, a Speech-Language Pathology student on the Downers Grove Campus and President of the NSSLHA chapter.
The Chapter's activities during the 2022-23 academic year included sending nearly 30 letters to the Illinois State Congress, advocating for the preservation of the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). This compact enables clinicians to provide vital services to underserved and geographically isolated populations, ensuring access to necessary care.
In addition to their legislative efforts, the student group organized and hosted an inclusive Aphasia Night, offering support and resources to members of the Downers Grove community. The chapter also participated in a Special Recreation Valentine's Dance, providing assistance and care to adolescents and adults with special needs and disabilities, and raised more than $1,000 at the Walk for Apraxia. These funds will contribute to research on Childhood Apraxia of Speech, support their National Conference Scholarship Program, and directly aid affected families.
